What are Hardest Questions?

Questions that push students from remembering a topic to applying it.

Hardest Questions push students one step further than Core Content. Core Content helps students learn and remember a topic. Hardest Questions ask them to apply it.

We use our data to find the concepts students find hardest. Then we identify the questions inside those topics that cause the most problems. Our subject experts write new questions on those points.

From remembering to applying

Remembering a fact is not the same as being able to use it. Hardest Questions give students a familiar idea in an unfamiliar situation. Students might explain a new example, solve a problem or predict a result.

Where to find them

On the content step of an assignment, each topic shows a Hardest questions option next to Core content. Tick it to add Hardest Questions for that topic. Only topics that have Hardest Questions show the option.

You can add Core Content and Hardest Questions for the same topic. Or you can add one without the other.

Who can use them

Hardest Questions are part of Seneca Premium.

  • Teachers need Premium to add Hardest Questions to an assignment.

  • Students need Premium to answer them.

  • Do not assign Hardest Questions to students in year groups that do not have Premium (check with your school success manager if you don't know who has premium premiumschools@seneca.io)

  • Students studying on their own can also unlock Hardest Questions with reward tokens. They earn these by studying.

What this means for your assignments

  • Set Core Content first so students secure the knowledge. Then add Hardest Questions so they practise applying it.

  • Set both on the same topic to build from recall to application in one piece of homework.

  • Use Exam Questions when you want students to practise writing longer answers.
