From September 2026, teachers at UK schools that aren't synced with Seneca can create up to 10 assignments each term for free. Syncing your school removes the limit completely, and it's free for the first year.
Students can continue to use Seneca for free an unlimited amount.
What's changing
Seneca remains free to get started as a teacher, and for students to do independent revision & complete the work assigned to them. What's new is a limit on how many assignments each teacher can create per term at schools that don't yet sync their MIS (Arbor, Bromcom, SIMS etc) with Seneca.
The sync is free for the first year, and makes Seneca significantly easier to use by creating all your classes, accounts, and supporting multi-class assignments.
From the start of the September term:
Each teacher at an unsynced UK school can create 10 assignments per term.
Once you've created your 10th, you won't be able to set new assignments until the next term begins, or until your school syncs.
The count resets at the start of every term.
This doesn't impact anything you've already set. Existing assignments stay live, your students can keep working on them, and you'll still see all their results.
We are combining this with the release of major improvements to the assignment feature, including the ability to assign multiple courses & content types within one assignment.
Does this affect me?
You'll see the limit if:
Your school is in the UK, and
Your school hasn't synced with Seneca through your management information system (MIS).
If you're not sure whether your school is synced, or need further information, please reach out to learnmore@seneca.io
What still stays free
Students always study for free. There's no limit on students studying, whether that's homework you've set or revision in their own time.
Core Seneca content remains free to browse and assign.
Your existing assignments keep working with no change.
The first 10 assignments each term work in the same way as always.
Syncing your school is free for the whole first year.
What counts towards the limit
Each assignment you create counts as one
The limit is per teacher, not per school. Your count is separate from your colleagues'.
It resets each term, so you start every term with a fresh 10.
How to keep creating unlimited assignments
Syncing your school with Seneca allows you to create unlimited assignments, making Seneca significantly easier to use. Most of the manual setup that eats into teachers' time disappears on the Sync Package.
Once your school is synced:
No more manual class management. Your classes and pupils are created automatically from your school's own records, and kept up to date daily as students join, leave or change groups. You never have to add students by hand or share join codes.
Create multi-class assignments to several classes at once instead of recreating the same assignment for each one.
Track progress over time with Gradebook and enhanced reporting, so you can see how classes and pupils are doing at a glance.
Manage your whole school from one place, including joining any class and resetting student or teacher passwords.
Parents are linked automatically to their children, so they can follow their child's progress and you can invite them in a couple of clicks.
The assignment limit is removed for every teacher at your school.
Syncing is free for your first year.
How syncing works
Syncing connects Seneca to your school's MIS (e.g. Arbor, Bromcom, SIMS) through a secure service called Wonde. It usually needs sign-off from someone who manages your school's systems, such as your data manager or a member of the senior leadership team.
To get the ball rolling:
We'll send a request to your school's admin to approve the connection (usually go talk to your HoD or Data/IT manager)
Once approved, your classes sync automatically and the limit is lifted.
If you're a class teacher rather than an IT admin, HoD, or Senior Leader, the quickest route is often to raise this with your HoD.
Frequently asked questions
Why are you introducing a limit?
Seneca works best when a whole school is set up properly, with classes and pupils synced from your records. Syncing saves teachers hours of manual setup, lets us build better tools for schools, and means we can verify which accounts are real student & teacher users linked to schools.
The free termly allowance means the overwhelming majority of teachers will be able to get started on Seneca freely, while pointing schools that rely on it heavily towards a proper school-wide setup which better supports their usage.
Is Seneca no longer free?
Seneca is still free. Students can study for free an unlimited amount, and every teacher can still set assignments for free each term. Syncing, which removes the limit, is also free for your first year.
What happens when I reach 10 assignments?
You'll be able to keep using everything else as normal, but you won't be able to create new assignments until the next term starts, or until your school syncs. Your existing assignments and all your students' progress stay exactly as they are.
When does the limit reset?
At the start of each term: Autumn, Spring and Summer (specifically, it resets on the 1st of September, January, and April).
Does this affect my students?
No. Students can study, revise and complete the work you've set without any limit, completely free.
I teach at an international school — does this apply to me?
No. The limit applies only to UK schools that haven't synced.
My school has already synced. Do I need to do anything?
No. If your school is synced, you have unlimited assignments and won't see any limit.
My school is Premium. Do I need to do anything?
No. If your school has Premium (synced or not) the limit will not apply.
